You cannot significantly increase the level of oxygen in your blood by breathing more!

Your blood is usually 99% saturated with oxygen and you cannot squeeze more in by deep breathing.

A study was done in 1963 and written up in the New England Journal of Medicine [a very prestigious medical journal], where people were forced to breathe as deeply as they could for 15 minutes. Before they started the doctors measured the oxygen and CO2 levels in their blood.

After 15 minutes of deep breathing the level of oxygen had DROPPED greatly in the blood, and the CO2 level had increased. Did this breathing make them feel good? Nope. They were dizzy, nauseous, and many were coughing and wheezing.

So always remember – your lungs are a gas mixing chamber. They work best when you have the right mix of gases in them – just like the carburettor of a car.

If the mix of gases is wrong, then the motor will have low power, poor economy and will wear out faster. [Not to mention spluttering and backfiring!]

The breathing done during an asthma attack is similar to that done by the subjects of the study in 1963. When we get asthma we ‘naturally’ try to breathe more deeply – to get more air in. Because we feel like are not getting enough. Interestingly – the harder we try to push more air into our lungs – the more the air pipes close up.

The medication in an inhaler goes straight into the airways, if you are in. This means that a much smaller dose than you need to breathe the medication in tablet or liquid in her mouth. . Reliever inhalers – contain bronchodilator drugs
You can use a rescue inhaler as needed to relieve symptoms, if you are short of breath, wheezing or tight upper body. Drugs in a rescue inhaler relaxes the muscles of the airways. The other opens the airways and relieve the symptoms usually appear quickly. These drugs are called bronchodilators such as (extended) to develop the bronchi (airways).

Both drugs are the most important reliever salbutamol and terbutaline. These brands are manufactured by different companies. . Preventer inhalers – usually contain a steroid
They are taken daily to prevent symptoms from developing countries. The type of drug is often anti inhalers is a steroid. Steroids work by reducing inflammation in the airways. Drugs in these inhalers work in a similar way to ease, but work up to 12 hours after ingestion of each dose. They include salmeterol (Serevent ® brand – one inhaler green) and formoterol (trade name Atimos ®, Foradil ® and Oxis ®).

A long-acting bronchodilator may be advised in addition to a steroid inhaler if symptoms are not fully controlled by inhaled steroids alone.

Some brands of inhaler contain a steroid and a long-acting bronchodilator for people who need both to control their symptoms. Examples are the combination inhalers.

• Fostair ® (formoterol and beclomethasone).
• Seretide ® (salmeterol and fluticasone). This is a purple inhaler.
• Symbicort ® (budesonide and formoterol).
. Inhalation devices
Different inhalation devices depending on different people. They can be divided into four groups ..

• The increase in metered dose inhalers (MDI).
• Breath-activated inhalers – metered dose inhalers and inhalers.
• inhalers with spacers.
• nebulizer.
. The standard MDI inhaler
A standard MDI is displayed on the right side. MDI is used for over 40 years and is used to provide different types and brands of drugs. It contains an inert gas under pressure, a dose of players in each “puff”. Each dose is released by pressing the top of the inhaler. This type of inhaler is fast, small and comfortable to wear. It needs a well-coordinated press the canister and breathe in its entirety at the same time. Sometimes these are known as Evohaler (depending on manufacturer).

The standard MDI inhaler is the most widely used. However, many people do not use their best effect. Common errors: not shaking the inhaler before use, inhaling too much or the wrong time, not your breath long enough after breathing in the content.

Another breath activated inhalers are also available in dry powder inhalers. These inhalers do not contain the gas pressure to propel the drug inactive. You still have to push the cartridge to release a dose. Instead, you trigger a dose by breathing into the mouthpiece. Accuhaler, Clickhaler, budesonide Novolizer, Turbuhaler, and DISKHALER twisthalers are breath activated dry powder inhalers. You need to breathe hard enough to get the powder into your lungs. Some types are presented below.

The individual components all have some differences in how they work, but they generally require less coordination than the standard MDI. They tend to be slightly larger than the standard MDI.

. Spacer devices
Spacer devices used with pressurized metered-dose inhalers. There are different types – one example is the opposite. The spacer between the inhaler and the mouth holds the drug like a reservoir when the inhaler is pressed. A valve at the end of the mouth ensures that the drug is retained within the spacer until you in. When you exhale, close the valve to breathe. You do not need to have good coordination to use a spacer device.

A mask can be mounted on certain types of spacers, rather than a mouthpiece. It is sometimes used for small children and infants, which are then made with the inhaler just by breathing normally through the mask.

There are different types of spacer. Able Spacer ®, Aerochamber Plus ®, Nebuchamber ®, Opti ® House Bed Pocket ®, Volumatic ® and Vortex ®: Examples are. Some spacing devices fit all MDIs, others only with certain brands of inhalers.

Tips on using a spacer device
Here are some tips if you are prescribed a spacer to maintain. These have a valve at the mouth end – the spacer in the image above is an example.

• If your dose is more than a breath, then a train to another.
• Shake the inhaler before firing each train.
• Begin to breathe into the mouthpiece as soon as possible after the fire of the breath into the device.
• Try to hold your breath for a moment, if you have inhaled
• Inhale and a couple of times before getting the next train. Try to hold your breath for a few moments each time you breathe in.
• Check that the valve opens and closes with each breath.
• A mask, valve end for babies and toddlers are provided. They breathe normally with the face against the mask. The valve opens and closes with each breath in and out. Keep the spacer slightly tilted with the upper end inhaler, permission to open and close the valve.
• Static electricity can build up inside the plastic chamber. This can attract particles of the decrease of the drug, and power, when the spacing is used. To avoid this, wash the plastic spacer as directed by the manufacturer instructions. This is usually before first use and then once a month with soap and water. Allow to air dry without rinsing or wiping.
. Nebulizer
Nebulizers are machines that turn liquid form of short-acting bronchodilator medication into a fine mist, as an aerosol. You breathe with a mask or mouthpiece. Inhalers are more effective than regular inhalers, but they are very useful for people who are very tired (tired) with their breathing, or people who are very breathless. Nebulizers are used mainly to hospital for severe asthma attacks when high doses of inhaled drugs are needed. They are less frequent than in the past as modern spacer devices are generally used just as good as nebulisers for giving large doses of inhaled medications. You do not need to coordinate the use in a nebulizer – you just inhale and exhale, and you breathe in. medicine.

How To Make a Little Asthma Wheeze Into A BIG One

If you have a little wheeze – and want to make it into a big one – then just work on breathing harder and deeper. Here is some dime store physiology – listen now and see if it makes sense.

Our lungs need to have the right mix of oxygen and carbon dioxide. If it gets too out of balance it will mess up our body chemistry and we will die. Note that we need to keep enough carbon dioxide in our lungs – not just oxygen. We need the right mix.

We get oxygen from the air around us, and we produce carbon dioxide by consuming energy in our body. Blood brings carbon dioxide to the lungs and we release it when we breathe out.

Think what will happen if we breathe too much for the level of enegy we are burning. Remember we need to breathe at the right level to have just the right mix of carbon dioxide and oxygen in our lungs. If we breathe our carbon dioxide out faster than we produce it – the level in our lungs will drop. There will be almost no change in oxygen in our lungs – no matter how much we breathe extra.

If the level of carbon dioxide in our lungs drops too low – we will die. So to stop that from happening – our body has defenses. A very simple defense is to cause the airpipes to close up [bronchoconstriction]. This means that a smaller volume of air able to be breathed – and therefore less carbon dioxide will be released out of our bodies. So we trap more in – and when enough is trapped in – the bronchoconstriction is no longer needed – and it stops. Is this too simple to be real?

Research has shown that the smooth muscle of the bronchi [airpipes] will constrict if put into a low carbon dioxide environment, and relax if put into high carbon dioxide environment.

So – if you are an asthmatic – which means that you have the ability to do this cool bronchoconstriction thing – and you want to create an asthma attack – just breathe in such a way as to lower the carbon dioxide in your lungs. Easy. If you already have an asthma attack and want to make it worse – guess what you need to do?

The answer is obviously not to do anything but take your drugs and stay alive so you can learn how to use the Buteyko method to eventually avoid the whole thing. Once you learn how to do the breathing to stop an attack using less and less medication – you will find the attacks happen less often and you can relieve them without your inhalers – until you rarely ever have an attack.
