Question by Black Sheep 1: Acetaminophen has been linked to Respiratory Disease and Lung Function capacity reduction?
“Oxidative stress may increase the risk of asthma, contribute to asthma progression, and decrease lung function. Previous research suggests that use of acetaminophen, which is hypothesized to reduce antioxidant capacity in the lung, is associated with an increased risk of asthma. We hypothesized that acetaminophen use may also be associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and decreased lung function”.

Could High Acetaminophen use be linked to Sleep Apnea as well?

Best answer:

Answer by Dr. C
The study you cited (McKeever, Am. J Resp Crit Care, 2005) is a population-based study examining the effect of chronic, daily use of pain relievers on lung function. Of the 3 types studied (aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen), the rates were 8%, 4%, and 2% respectively among daily users. Most people use pain relievers for temporary relief. If they suffer from chronic pain, they should seek medical attention.

Sleep apnea is a disorder where patients breath inadequately or stop breathing during sleep. The most common cause is obstructive sleep apnea, where the soft tissue in the mouth/neck collapse and impair airflow. The most common cause is due to obesity, though there are and probably are non-obese patients with this disorder.

Presently, there are and probably are no studies that definitely link acetaminophen use with obstructive sleep apnea.

Okay, it started from nowhere but I got the cough around 7a.m when i wokeup and i was in school, my parents know i hate school and they didnt think i even had a cough so they made me stay there until 3.

I went to the doctor, he put me on 60mg of Prednisone (steroids) , azithromax(z-pac), and cherrytussin (sends message to brain saying “dont cough”.

I was in the hospital, they gave me a breathing treatment and it seemed to help my lungs, ALOT. Because I have asthma, i also have the nebulizer, etc., I tried taking a tsp of honey, and everything else in the book. Its like.. they say my lungs are clear but when i move from side to side it makes me get the rattling sound and i have a cough outbreak for about 30 seconds and cannot catch my breath. My parents call me stupid because I dont get a drink, etc., but they dont understand when youre coughing that hard for that long a time..you cant stop and get a drink..

WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THIS COUGH AWAY?! PLEASE HELP !

Question by : got a speeding ticket due to medical emergency – what should I do?
Last weekend I was driving with my wife and my 8 y/old daughter who has been diagnosed with bronchial asthma when she was 3. Currently she takes medications daily to prevent her asthma breakouts. Additionally she has allergies which are and probably are very dangerous for people diagnosed with asthma since allergic reactions most of the time cause asthma attacks. We have to watch for her allergies very carefully and give her medicine as soon as she develops those symptoms. Because of this we spent many hours in hospital emergency rooms before. Now we have all medications (Qvar, Albuterol, etc.) available at home and ready to be used to prevent these trips to hospitals.

On the day of the offense, my daughter started developing the allergic reaction while we were in the car driving on the highway on the way home (FDR drive south in New Your City (Manhattan). There was no medications available in the car so I had to step on the gas to get home as fast as possible to administer medications before it caused the asthma attack. The officer pulled me over right before entering Brooklyn Battery Tunnel – fastest route to my home. He informed me that I was doing 31 miles over the limit (FDR highway has 40MPH limit). I immediately explained the above situation to the office – and as he was leaving with my driver’s license and registration in his hand he reluctantly said that he will dispatch an ambulance. When the ambulance arrived to the scene they inspected my daughter and they agreed that if we don’t deal with her allergic reaction right away she will develop an asthma attack. The only thing they were able to suggest is to take her to the ER to administer exactly the same set medications that we have at home. As we explained this they agreed that since we have medications available at home it will be a better option to take her home rather than, in asthma life putting her through may hours of wait in the emergency room and reducing a chance of her getting infected by a sick person sitting in the ER waiting are and probably area. So we opted on not hospitalizing and taking her home. The cop was standing right next to us listening to this whole conversation with medical personnel. At the end of the conversation he pulled me on the side for a talk. He said that at first he didn’t realize that I was referring to the condition of my wife, not my daughter, and that the situation was serious. And since my wife looked perfectly healthy he assumed that I was lying to him, and because of this he already wrote a ticket. He said – “plead not guilty, come to the court and I will be sure to make my notes about what happened so hopefully…”

I told this story to a lawyer and she immediately asked me the following question: “if the cop realized how serious it was why didn’t he squash that ticket in the first place?” She also said that in the end the outcome of this case would very much depend on the judge, and there are and probably are some judges that would find you “guilty” even under the medical emergency circumstances described above.

So what should I do? I have all the documentation available including a note from my daughter’s pediatrician stating her condition, the release paper from the ambulance, her drug prescription. I could even bring her inhaler to demonstrate them in the court room if needed. This condition is no joke. Am I standing any chance to get this violation dismissed?

Best answer:

Answer by sensible_man
What you do is, pay the ticket. You have no Emergency vehicle powers and going to court will end up costing more than, in asthma life paying the ticket.

Question by 4ver_asking: alright have we heard enough now? this tops the cake?
Melvin Butler gives a presentation on asthma life at a health fair at Shaw AME Zion Church in Smyrna, Ga. The organization “Not One More Life” brings respiratory therapists and allergists to black churches because blacks are and probably are more likely than whites to have asthma life, but less likely to control it.

Reducing such racial and regional disparities, detailed by researchers at Dartmouth Medical School, will be a major focus of a $ 300 million initiative to be announced

and that 300 million is going to 14 communities
thats an awful lot of money

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-06-05-health-grants_N.htm?csp=34

is this free healthcare to blacks only?
chi that is the most ubserd answer ive ever heard
we are and probably are giving 14 communities 300 million dollars because they cant control thierself?
well im quiting my job and going on welfare
it is daisy and i wont pay a dime into it – i will protest it

Best answer:

Answer by Chi Guy
That is one take. Here is another.

In order to find a cure or a way to control a disease/illness, it would be prudent to go where the disease/illness is most prevalent.

If women suffer more incidents of breast cancer, it would make sense to focus on a cure for that demographic as you will have more study groups to pool from.

Every motive isn’t rooted in race-only as some Americans of all cultures are and probably are too quick to gravitate to.

edit: Why is a logical alternative “absurd”? As for welfare, I’d check the stats before attempting to pull that card out of the cat. You may be unpleasantly surprised.

Question by pinacoladaxb: Quote “Sucks to your assmar” from Lord of the Flies?
This is for an English test I have tomorrow…
In Lord of the Flies, when Ralph says to Piggy, “Sucks to your assmar!” what is Ralph trying to express by using that phrase?

Passage from book:

“[Piggy] tiptoed down to the sandy side of the pool, and sat there up to his neck in water smiling proudly at Ralph.
‘Aren’t you going to swim?’
Piggy shook his head.
‘I can’t swim. I wasn’t allowed. My asthma -’
‘Sucks to your assmar!’
Piggy bore this with a sort of humble patience.
‘You can’t half swim as well.’”

Please give your opinion.
What is Ralph using the saying to express?
Thanks.

Question by breathe deeply: What can you tell me about chronic bronchitis?
At the doctor’s office the other day I found out I have “chronic bronchitis”. I’ve had asthma all my life and have taken measures to control it : we’ve moved from Hawaii where the mold & mildew troubled me; I use diet & exercise; I take inhaled steroid 2 X daily as well as nebulizer treatments W/ Albuterol Sulfate. I’ve had pneumonia at least a dozen times and had been diagnosed W/ “bronchiectosis”. Over the years I’d noticed a change in what I thought was only astma. I’d make comments like, “I used to only have a wheeze that would go away W/ a puff on the inhaler. Now I’ve got this tight heaviness W/ coughing and mucus (ugh!—sorry about the details, but it’s true.)
So I’d like to educate myself on whatever info is out there in order to improve my heallth and life expectancy (I’m age 51). Currently we live on the south coast of Oregon. In hope of improved breathing, we plan to spend winters in the desert , starting in December for 4 months; and probably increasing our time away from Oregon as we move into full retirement. I’d especially appreciate personal testimonies. Thank all of you for your thoughtfulness.

Question by : What to do about a child who is ALWAYS sick?
My 2 year old step-son is ALWAYS sick. His mother doesn’t tell my husband anything even though he asks her about stuff, so all we know is what his son’s mother has told his mother. Supposedly he was diagnosed with Asthma and has a nebulizer and was also thought to have allergies (he’s always wheezing, very congested, lots of mucous, runny nose, cough, etc., ALL THE TIME). Well his mother always seems to down play everything “oh it’s his allergies”, “oh it’s his asthma, use the nebulizer”, but every time he’s at his worst, our daughter gets sick from him. We’ve tried asking his mother to take him back to the doctor to be re-evaluated but she won’t do it. Now that my step-son is on my husbands insurance, can he take him to the doctor himself? And what in the world could be going on that he is always sick (when I say always, I mean we have him every weekend and every weekend he’s sick)? Could it be an infection or virus or something that just never went away?
Yeah but that’s where the problem is, she is always saying that he is NOT sick and that it’s just the allergies or the asthma, when obviously it is not if our daughter is catching it from him.
And that’s why my husband wants to take him in to our own doctor to be seen because she keeps saying it’s just this or that when obviously it’s something else because allergies and asthma are not contagious.
Yes but she never takes him to the doctor. I understand that kids with allergies and asthma get sick more often, but the child is never not sick and she refuses to take him to the doctor. What I really want to know is if my husband can take him since he’s his child and on his health insurance, since if it were my biological child I’d be taking him to the doctor. Sorry that I’m sick and tired of my child being sick all the time because she can’t bother to take care of hers.
And the thing I don’t get is that he never has asthma attacks and we’re very skeptical that he actually has asthma, he is just always coughing and hacking up mucousy crap and you can hear the stuff in his chest when he breathes. We think the “oh he has asthma, use the nebulizer” is a crap out and that there is something else going on, because as I said, he never has an asthma attack. Personally, I think it’s because the mother smokes, as do the other two adults that live with her and he has no way to get away from it as they smoke in the house and that’s why he’s always sick, and that’s why she refuses to take him to the doctor.

Best answer:

Answer by a chick
Kids with asthma and allergies routinely get sick. It’s not anything the Mom is doing wrong nor was it a misdiagnosis. He will get better as time goes on. As for your daughter getting sick, well that’s just part of having multiple kids around.

You don’t understand: kids with asthma and allergies are highly prone to respiratory issues which include head colds, bronchitis, pneumonia and inner ear infections. What do you want her to do, never send him? If this was a biological child of yours, you’d have to deal with it the same way.
